Meet the team.

The National Academy program is coached by some of the best players and coaches in the world that have played and coached at the highest level.

Sam Cross

(Wales & GB7s)

Sam has coached with UR7s since 2014. Sam was a member of the GB7s side at the Rio Olympics in 2016. He has also captained Wales 7s, playing on the World Sevens Series for a number of seasons. He recently made his Wales XVs debut and is now plying his trade for the Ospreys in the back-row. Sam also represented Wales & GB students.

Tom Burwell

(Academy Director)

Tom joined UR7s in 2008 and founded the UR7s Academy in 2012. He has worked all over the world working with national sides in Asia & Africa. His passion is performance development and getting the very best out of every individual involved in the program. He prides himself on creating a fun, vibrant atmosphere that results in those involved best positioned to thrive.

Chris Cracknell

(England & Fiji 7s)

Chris has been coaching with UR7s since 2012 when he was still playing for England 7s. A successful playing career with the likes of Harlequins and Bath, Chris has gone on to coaching Fiji Women in the Olympics and was the assistant to Ben Ryan for Fiji men as they won gold in Rio. Chris is now coaching in the MLR in the USA.

Luke Treharne

(Wales 7s)

Luke is the current Wales 7s captain and graduated the University of Exeter as a doctor in 2017. His ambition is to play in the Tokyo Olympics before then starting his medical career. He enjoys sharing his experiences on and off the field with the young players in the academy.

Sam Edgerley

(England 7s)

Sam is a long time coach with UR7s. After a successful career with England 7s that saw him scoring tournament winning tries for his country he has recently graduated from Oxford University and his continuing to play rugby alongside a successful career in the City of London. Sam is a brilliant young coach with S&C qualifications.

Christian Lewis-Pratt

(England 7s)

One of the most creative players ever to play for England 7s, Christian now runs his own gym in the centre of London and is continuing to craft his coaching trade in the gym, on the track and on the field. Christian played on the World Series and in the 2013 Rugby World Cup 7s.

JB Gobelet

(France 7s)

A Top 14 winner with Biarritz who played in a Heineken Cup Final, JB went onto a great career with France 7s stopping off at Stade Francais along the way. Now Head Coach of the 7s Academy in France and Director of Rugby for Mauritius, JB brings some French flair to the coaching team.

Chris Knight

(Wales 7s)

Knighty leads the UR7s scouting team and works with the senior academy. A destructive winger for Wales 7s saw him play in a Rugby World Cup 7s in Moscow. Chris is now concentrating on his coaching career following an injury.

Dan Norton

(GB7s & England 7s)

The leading try scorer ever on the World Series, Dan has coached with UR7s since 2015. Dan has a vast experience in the world of 7s and is able to share this and his experiences coming through Hartpury College with the players involved in the program.

Ethan Davies

(Wales 7s)

Ethan Davies made his Wales 7s debut in 2015 and has now played in over 20 World Series tournaments for Wales. Ethan began coaching with UR7s in 2018 and works with both the junior and senior age-groups whilst spending time specifically with the kickers and playmakers in both squads.

Will Wilson

(England 7s & Wasps)

Will came through the UR7s National Academy after first being spotted as a U15. He went onto captain Wellington College and attend Oxford University where he won two varsity matches. Will now plays for Wasps in the English Premiership and has been coaching with UR7s since 2017. He wants to be able to share his experience with young players that are now following the same pathway that he did himself.

Jordan Ainslie

(England 7s Academy & Uni of Bath)

Jordan has come through the UR7s Coach Development program. After staring for Warwick School, Jordan signed for England Sevens Academy and has spent 18 months playing on the European Series and around the world with the next group of England 7s stars. Now studying at Bath University, Jordan has become an important part of the academy coaching team working with both the Junior & Senior squads.

Phil Burgess

(England 7s & GB7s)

Phil Burgess needs no introduction, he has been a regular in the England squad that has won on the HSBC World Sevens Series and medalled in both the Rugby 7s World Cup and Commonwealth Games. Phil was also part of the Team GB silver medal-winning side in Rio 2016. Phil has been coaching with UR7s since 2017 and has a specific area of interest in the breakdown. Phil is a talisman for the England side and he has the same role for the boys in the Academy.

Jak Rossiter, Joe Byrnes,

Barney Pascall

& Ollie Clough

Vitally important members of the coaching team. All four have played at the highest level of invitational 7s including GB Students and have won tournaments such as the Dubai 7s. All are university graduates that bring a different set of experiences to those involved in the program.
